Northland Wine Trail
Butterfly Bay is central to some award-winning wineries. Take the time during your stay to travel through Northland and the Far North to sample some of the best wines New Zealand has to offer.
Most wineries offer the perfect picturesque setting in which to enjoy a leisurely lunch during your tasting.
Okahu Estate is New Zealand’s most northern vineyard and winery. The winery is situated 3.5ks from Kaitaia on the road to Ahipara which is at the southern end of the Ninety Mile Beach.
The first vines were established in 1984 by vineyard owner by Monty Knight. Since then the label has earned a reputation for consistent quality, winning numerous awards including two gold medals for their Chardonnay and one gold medal for Shiraz.
The vineyard flavors give the wines a point of difference, which set them apart from other New Zealand labels. Also unique to the winery is their marketing strategy of either naming the wines after people associated with the business, or the local place names, encapsulating not only a family theme, but also making a statement about the wines and their origins.
Carrington Estate Vineyards and Carrington Club are located on the secluded Karikari Peninsular. The Club boasts an international 18 hole golf course, 25 hectare vineyard, luxury accommodations and fine dining.
The vineyard is planted predominately in Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon. Other varieties include Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay and Semillon.
Lying to the sun amidst the citrus-covered slopes of Northland is Marsden Estate, Kerikeri's award-winning winery. It's named after Samuel Marsden, who introduced the grapevine to New Zealand with 100 plantings at Kerikeri in 1819.
The plantings at Marsden are a little more recent but both the wine and the estate building have a timeless quality. Original cuisine complimented by estate grown wines can be enjoyed in a relaxed courtyard atmosphere overlooking the lake and vines. Wine sales, tastings and tours are also available.
Cottle Hill is a small boutique winery situated on a sunny knoll just out of Kerikeri in the magical Bay of Islands. Founded by Barbara and Michael Webb, their philosophy is that wine is for every day and everyone. Their focus is to have a range of wines to suit every palate from beginner to connoisseurs.Barbara and Michael enjoy helping people to explore the different wines and you are bound to find something to suit your palate.
Cottle Hill vineyards consist of Chardonnay, Pinotage, Pinot Noir and a new planting of Chambourcin. The winery also makes Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon from grapes grown on contract. For only 7 vintages the winery has accumulated quite an array of medals, including: Gold for their reserve Chardonnay, Silver for Merlot and Bronze for Pinotage.
The winery is open every day and offers gourmet platters and ploughman's lunch in the summertime, and wine tasting all year round. You are invited to visit and relax with a glass of award-winning wine and enjoy the ambience of a lovely vineyard setting.
